More than 2,000 years ago, Teotihuacan was a large city that could accommodate nearly 200,000 people, but then it disappeared mysteriously, leaving behind great buildings such as the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, which were listed by UNESCO as a large city. World Heritage Site. To this day, visitors are still amazed by the unimaginable architectural art.
As early as 700 BC, the construction of the city began here. After thousands of years of unremitting efforts, archaeologists estimate that by 500 AD, a large city with a capacity of nearly 200,000 people had been built here, which was larger than the ancient Roman city at that time and one of the few in the world. One of the big cities.
After nearly 100 years of archaeology and excavation, people believe that this is an ancient city with perfect design and planning. had a very important impact.
Teotihuacan is the name given to the ancient city by the later ancient Indians, meaning "sacred place", or more broadly referred to as "the place where people become gods".
The ancient city covers an area of about 20 square kilometers, long from north to south and narrow from east to west. The river "Saint Kuan" flows through the city. At the northern end of the city, there is a pyramid of the moon about 47 meters high.
On the south side of the Pyramid of the Moon is a square where there are many small buildings of different shapes. The most exquisite of these is a palace to the southwest of the tower. There are beautiful Roman columns in the temple, which are carved with different patterns, such as butterflies with feathers and animals related to water. It is speculated that this may have been the place where high-ranking people such as senior priests lived in the city at that time.
Just south of the tower is an avenue about 2.5 kilometers long, called "Death Avenue". There are buildings of varying sizes and similar styles on both sides of "Death Avenue", most of which are apartments. Below each apartment are buried their ancestors. It is estimated that there are more than 2,000 people. It is a pity that the buildings we see now are only some foundations.
The width of the avenue varies from 40 meters to 90 meters, and it is high in the north and low in the south. Under the roadbed at that time, a wide and long drainage system was built, which could drain the rainwater into the "Sacred Kuan" River in the south.
On the east side of the middle of the avenue, there is a huge building - the Pyramid of the Sun. This is the third highest pyramid in the world in terms of height and the oldest building in the city, so it has a dominant position. The Pyramid of the Sun is a square building with a height of about 83 meters and a side length of 245 meters. It was built with bricks cut from volcanic rock. The whole tower is divided into five parts. Each part is connected by a platform, and there was a shrine on the top of the tower, but it cannot be restored to its original state due to weathering over time. Standing on the top of the tower, you can overlook the whole picture of the whole ancient city. On a clear day, you can see the modern architecture of Mexico.
When you walk along the west slope of the tower and climb the steep tower wall with 248 steps, you will hear the sound of the Indian flute, as if you have suddenly fallen into the time tunnel, and you will see the ancient people without iron. In the age of the tools, they piled up the bricks and stones in front of them with wisdom and sweat, and at the same time they were approaching their spiritual pursuit step by step.
At the southern end of Death Avenue is a square castle with a side length of 400 meters, surrounded by a low wall. There are several different temples here, the most famous of which is the Temple of the Serpent. And the worship of this god, the Maya, the Totec and the ancient Indians were exactly the same.
The interior of the castle is surrounded by four large platforms with pyramids. In the middle is a large square that can easily accommodate 100,000 people and was the place where the main religious activities were held at that time.
According to reports, to celebrate the foundation stone laying ceremony of the castle, 260 people volunteered to be buried. On that day, they were dressed in full attire, with their hands tied behind their backs as a sign of humility. These were buried under the foundation stone individually or in groups of 4, 9, 12, 18 and 20 according to the calendar.
Standing on the top of the temple at the highest point of the castle and looking to the north, but seeing the two pyramids of "Sun" and "Moon" standing majestically at the foot of the distant mountain, people are left with a series of thoughts: "Who built this ancient city? What was the name at the time? What language did they speak? Why did the ancient city suddenly disappear after thousands of years?
