Kandaliya Mahadai Temple in India

The Kandaliya Mahadai Ao Temple in India, also known as the Kandaliya Temple of Heaven, was built between 1025 and 1050 AD and is located in the ancient town of Kajurahou, known as the "city of gods". It is a typical northern Hindu temple. , the main tower is about 35.5 meters high.

In the Middle Ages, Indian architectural styles were roughly divided into three schools, Maratha School, Orissa School, and Karatik School. The main feature of this building is the curvilinear ring-shaped tower structure, which looks like bamboo shoots from a distance, so it is also called "bamboo shoot tower". From the outside, the "Bamboo Pagoda" is gorgeously carved, and the outline of the tower body is soft and elastic. It is said that this style originated from the Indian folk bamboo weaving and mud-coated roofs. The climate of India is warm and humid, and the rainy season is abundant. In order to prevent water from leaking into the house in rainy days, the design of the roof is steep and high. Since the roof is made of bamboo as the basic material, the roof has a curved outline due to the elasticity of the bamboo.

Around the 10th century, there were more than 80 temples in Khajuraho, the capital of the small kingdom of India at that time, among which the largest and most famous is the Kandaliya Mahadaiao Temple introduced here, which is dedicated to the worship of wet Built by the goddess.

Kandaliya Mahadai Ao Temple is now located in a dusty open field in the ancient town of Kajulahou. From a distance, it stands on the ground like several peaks, and the beige sandstone tower is in the sunlight. It was like a golden veil under the light. The temple stands on a high platform and consists of a porch, a foyer, an inner hall, a main hall and a 35.5-meter-high main tower standing on the main hall. The carvings make the whole building an unparalleled masterpiece of sculptural art.

The top of the tower of the whole temple is sharp, and the tower has layers of protrusions. These protrusions are obvious rib-shaped uplifts. Against the background, the horizontal and vertical processing rhythm is clear, giving people a stable and solid feeling. The outline of the prayer hall between the temple hall and the foyer connects the foyer and the tower, thus making the temple look like a building complex composed of many towers and temples. From a distance, it looks like the sagittal arch of a medieval Gothic church in Europe, but it is not like the sagittal arch of a Gothic church, which rises sharply. Each of its tower tops is plump and stocky. , from bottom to top, like the back waves pushing the front waves, the power is concentrated on the spire.

A closer look at the statues on the tower body is rich in content. There are carvings on each floor of the tower, and the middle waist of several tower columns on the inside are decorated with three-storey relief Buddha statues. The statues have vivid images and various expressions. Some are wearing makeup, some are feeding the birds on their shoulders, some are leaning against a column, and some elephants are walking among lotus flowers with their thrones and gorgeous woven carpets... The carving uses a polishing technique that adds a sense of finely crafted opulence to the pagoda. Since many statues are made of single stone, they give people the impression that they are strong in ancient times.

The temple architecture of medieval India is unique in the history of world architecture, especially the Orissa architecture. By the end of the Middle Ages, this style had become rigid due to the endless repetition of the same, and was finally replaced by the emerging buildings with Islamic styles. However, as a model of Orissa architecture in northern India in the Middle Ages, the Kandaliya Mahadai Temple remains a treasure in the history of human architecture.

  Tips

Each tower in the Temple of Kandaliya Mahadai has a circular protrusion on the top called "Om Moleka" with an aquarium-like decoration on it called "Garosa". Another important feature is that there are several square colonnades on the left and right sides of the tower body that can be overlooked. The colonnade is an independent pavilion structure called "Mandabo". There are several layers of shrines under the colonnade. The top of the colonnade is a multi-level stepped cornice with a gabled roof. The body of the pagoda is gorgeously carved, and when viewed as a whole, the temple itself is a masterpiece of sculpture.
